Meet Owain: Backend Developer

Meet Owain: Backend Developer

Owain spends his time improving our backend tools to ensure interactions between the cloud and the mobile client are seamless and easy to manage.

What do you do at Bioepic?

I work on the backend API which sits between our app and cloud based processing.

How did you get into engineering?

I’ve always been passionate about science and technology and studied theoretical physics at university. Whilst there I had some exposure to programming, mostly modelling probability distributions in thermodynamic systems.

I love working with cutting edge technology and enjoy the fact that an idea becomes code which later becomes a tool that someone else can use to improve their quality of life.

Can you tell us a bit about what you’re working on this week?

I am currently working on adding social functionality to our app. Connect with your friends and compare health scores.

Who do you work with most, and how does your team run?

I collaborate with both our front end and research and development teams.

What are you excited about working on over the few months?

Diet is a key influencer of our overall health. Giving users the ability to scan the barcode of the products they consume may help to reveal patterns in diet and health.

What impact does your work have on the final customer experience?

A shiny app is no good if it cannot connect to the cloud services that empowers it.

What three words would you use to describe Bioepic(the team / company / culture)?

Insightful, innovative and stimulating.

What do you do for fun?

I really enjoy watching TED Talks videos on YouTube.

If you weren’t at Bioepic, what would you be doing?

Truthfully, I would probably be still at my previous job, missing out on all the great experience I am gaining here.

Tell us something unexpected about you

I have lost just over 50kg in just under 10 months.

    Hi

Having read the article about The Epic Health App in today’s Front page Daily Express, 10 July 2017.

I’ve had Type1 diabetes for over 40yrs and I’m now 56. I would lice to know where I can get hold if this APP or better still, be part of any trials that are going on.

Insulin dependant diabetes has been going on for soooooooo long, far too long in my view. Where we are still putting needles in ourselves, and pricking our fingers endlessly, to check our sugar levels that can be so erratic.

Please, I would love to be considered for any trials or help I can give in gettiing this phone APP off the ground so people can start using it and hopefully see improvements in their diabetic control and wellbeing.

As a TV Cameraman, my worklife is often very erratic with a lot of travelling and innconveniences etc… etc… and I’m often running sugar levels very high to avoid hypos, which, in the long term, is not good; I know that, but there’s not a great deal I can do about that, certainly at the moment anyway.

    Many thanks

Hi Chris, unfortunately the participation in the clinical trial is not selected by ourselves but independently by the appointed Clinical Research organisation – however due to the overwhelming response of applicants we are releasing an early access “beta” we welcome you to signup by the “early access” page, the beta will run in parallel to the clinical trial. Thanks Epic Team

Could you please send me the link to the early access page?
